Easy Indian – Mexican Fusion dish, Samosadilla

Mashup of samosas and quesadillas equals samosadilla! A super easy to make and healthier way to eat samosas. This version uses tortillas that are filled with samosa filling, chutneys, cheese and tortilla chips for some crunch.

What are samosas?

Samosas are a deep fried savory appetizer, snack or even entree.  They are popular particularly in Northern India but eaten across the continent.  Samosas are popular in many countries outside of India as well. It consists of a spiced potato and pea mixture enveloped in an all purpose dough.  Then, folded into a triangular shape and fried.

In India, samosas are served with chutneys.  Usually a sweet, tamarind based chutney and a savory, cilantro based one.

Samosa are delicious and thanks to this recipe you do not need to eat them deep fried.

Enter Samosadilla!

I think it is a fun, easy and healthier way to have samosas which are traditionally deep fried. This is a play on two dishes to make an Indian Mexican samosa.

Other alternatives to samosas

You can also make using puff pastry. I have two recipes using puff pastry: Samosa Pinwheels and Jalapeno Cheddar Samosas

What are samosadillas?

Play on samosas and quesadillas to make an Indian Mexican fusion dish.

The filling consists of:

  • Spiced potato and peas
  • Cilantro chutney
  • Apple butter chutney
  • Cheese
  • Tortillas for crunch like fried samosas have!

Chutneys for Samosa

The sweet and savory combo of chutneys really hits the spot in these.

Sweet Chutney

I love my Mom’s apple butter chutney.  That is what we grew up having and so I’ve included that recipe below.

You can also use this cranberry chutney recipe.

Savory Chutney

I’ve included a quick green chutney (cilantro chutney) in the recipe card.

How to make samosadillas

  1. Make samosa filling: using boiled potatoes (about 10 mins boiled), peas and spices it is a step that takes a few minutes. See below for microwave method to cook potatoes and peas.
  2. Chutneys: samosas are traditionally served with both a green chutney (cilantro based) and sweet chutney (tamarind based). I enjoy samosas with a variety of sweet chutneys such as: apple butter, cranberry and even pear!
  3. Put it all together: Heat a pan with a tortilla. Add chutneys, filling, cheese and tortillas for an optional crunch!

Note: I used Late July brand Jalapeno Lime tortillas which add a yummy flavor

I got the idea when the Tortilla Hack was trending and I like the idea of having a separate area for the tortilla chips so they stay crunchy.  But, you can just fold in half like the traditional quesadilla style.
